چکیده

The paper concerns the analysis of the correlations of wave fields propagating in heterogeneous media. We show that selected field-field correlations asymptotically propagate in non-scattering media, i.e., propagate as if the underlying medium was homogeneous. Such correlations are therefore good candidates for imaging strategies in heterogeneous media based on back-propagations in a homogeneous medium. keywords: inverse problem, imaging, correlations, radiative transfer, random media.

Imaging Using Transport Models for Wave-wave Correlations

We consider the imaging of objects buried in unknown heterogeneous media. The medium is probed by using classical (e.g., acoustic or electromagnetic) waves. When heterogeneities in the medium become too strong, inversion methodologies based on a microscopic description of wave propagation (e.g., a wave equation or Maxwell’s equations) become strongly dependent on the unknown details of the hete...

Rheological Response and Validity of Viscoelastic Model Through Propagation of Harmonic Wave in Non-Homogeneous Viscoelastic Rods

This study is concerned to check the validity and applicability of a five parameter viscoelastic model for harmonic wave propagating in the non-homogeneous viscoelastic rods of varying density. The constitutive relation for five parameter model is first developed and validity of these relations is checked. The non-homogeneous viscoelastic rods are assumed to be initially unstressed and at rest....

Wave field correlations in weakly mismatched random media

This paper concerns the derivation of a Fokker-Planck equation for the correlation of two high frequency wave fields propagating in two different random media. The mismatch between the random media need be small, on the order of the wavelength, and their correlation length need be large relative to the wavelength. The loss of correlation caused by the mismatch in the random media is quantified ...

Kinetic Models for Imaging in Random Media

We derive kinetic models for the correlations and the energy densities of wave fields propagating in random media. These models take the form of radiative transfer and diffusion equations. We use these macroscopic models to address the detection and imaging of small objects buried in highly heterogeneous media. More specifically, we quantify the influence of small objects on (i) the energy dens...

Simulating Shear Wave Propagation in Two-Dimensional Fractured Heterogeneous Media by Coupling Boundary Element and Finite Difference Methods

A hybrid method to model the shear wave (SH) scattering from 2D fractures embedded in a heterogeneous medium is developed by coupling Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Finite Different Method (FDM) in the frequency domain. FDM is used to propagate an SH wave from a source through heterogeneities to localized homogeneous domains where fractures are embedded within artificial boundaries. Accordin...
